Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia will unveil its first “tablet” in October, before handing Microsoft its production of consumer electronics, said Thursday Wall Street Journal on its website. According to several sources relayed by the Finnish and international press, Nokia will introduce half a dozen new products in Abu Dhabi on October 22. The daily New York Business reported, citing “people familiar with the project” Nokia, that among these products would be the first tablet of Finland. Contacted by AFP, Nokia declined to comment.

The tablet was part of the range of products that Nokia had to catch the American Apple and South Korea’s Samsung, which have largely outpaced the smartphone market. But the Finn has thrown in the towel and will become a telecom equipment without consumer product. For this tablet, “the key question is the price: it is clear that the brands other than iPad have had success only in the low end,” commented to AFP analyst consulting firm Finnish telecom Alekstra Tero Kuittinen.
