They would place an industrial revolution: the fab labs. These micro-factories, one of whose principles is their openness to all, derive their name from the English manufacturing laboratory , ie manufacturing laboratory. The fab labs include tools, including CNC, allowing to perform all sorts of objects. Thus, a contractor can find resources to make a prototype along with a handyman to make his own coffee table. The prevailing philosophy is that of Do It Yourself (do it by yourself). Fleur Pellerin, the Minister for the Digital Economy, has also launched in June a call for projects to support the development of fab labs. “We want to pollinate the territory with fab labs so that everyone can take the train of modernity,” she said in a statement.

These places innovation, created in the late 1990s by Neil Gershenfeld in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), must comply with a charter. This indicates that “fab labs are a global network of local laboratories that enable the invention to individuals by opening access to digital fabrication tools.” The fab labs must also bring a list of tools such as a laser or a precision milling cutter. Many also have 3D printers, although they are not specifically required by the MIT. Forty-seven fab labs are listed in France by FabWiki portal, some claiming this trend does not always adhere to the principles of MIT.

Community Laboratories

Close to fab labs by their capacity for innovation, the hackerspaces however differ slightly. Here, no charter or established organization. Not pirate the Net masked as might suggest their name. The hackerspaces are actually community laboratories where people share resources and knowledge, often on projects related to computers, technology, science, art … The unifying principle is based on the “freedom” they are generally open to the public, members share their knowledge and ideas and participate in movements around the open source and free software. There currently exist in France thirty hackerspaces active.

Many other areas which do not fall into these cases also exist. The Artlab, created in 2011 by Jason Cook is dedicated to digital art, located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris instead. Technicians bring their know-how. The artists come to Artlab residency to fully develop a work or are just passing through to enjoy the facilities. Workshops (workshops) are held regularly. Usually for schools, they should be open to the public from September.

Digital Art

“We’re close enough to fab labs in tools and techniques that are used, however, it is a little less open to all, “said Quentin Chevrier coordinator. “We are also on the list of hackerspaces because we realize the same kinds of developments, we have the same kinds of resources and is invested in everything that is open source.” The structure of this space is also special because it is based on the company Digitalarti a sort of box production of digital art.

This creative space is a real opportunity for artists when we know that the project Antonin Fourneau Water Light Graffiti has been around the world, Las Vegas Abu Dhabi. The concept: a wall of LED lighting to contact with water. The 20,000 diodes were set by hand by the team Artlab
