Munich, 16 September 2013 – Until now, natural gas engines in cars, for good reasons converted gasoline engines. ETH Zurich researchers now show the high efficiency potential of a diesel vehicle in predominantly natural gas. But the really enough to make the bivalent gasoline engines competition

Retrofitted gasoline engines are Ergdasbetrieb true miracle CO2 – emissions of the greenhouse gas comes back with the same performance by up to 25 percent. And yet this much energy is wasted even unnecessary. Namely the gasoline engine must remain as a fundamental gasoline recyclers because of the low knock resistance of the fuel in its compression under 14:1 – the most common engines are in the range of about 10:1. This is unfavorable because the combustion efficiency increases with the compaction. This is in addition to the higher energy content of the fuel and the dethrottling a factor for better energy utilization in diesel engine compresses about 17:1 yes (even as a motor chamber to about 21:1). Because the gasoline engine does not use the high knock resistance of fossil gas, it is technically only second choice for natural gas operation. The high compression ratio in diesel engine, however, can also be used to advantage in natural gas operation. Cope with its 130 octane gas also is common in diesel engines compression and can therefore do more work when burned. This makes the diesel engine running on gas, a few percent more efficient than a gasoline engine. That’s a lot, considering how much engineers will now have about half a percent increase in efficiency.

why diesel engines run in stationary applications such as power plants already in combined diesel / gas operation. With constant power and speed here it is relatively simple, efficient coordinated gas and oil flow together. Yes, oil volume. For natural gas operation one uses the principle of “self-ignition”: The trigger is a small amount of combustion in the compressed gas injected diesel fuel, so the only inflamed by the heat of the charge itself and the natural gas. From the normal operation of diesel pilot and post injections are usually omitted here so as not to disturb the combustion process of the gas charge.
