After being used to shoot a porn film, the Google Glass found a much more serious application. Three operations were conducted this summer during which surgeons were equipped with the famous glasses. Thus, they were able to film the entire process and broadcast live on the Internet. The goal is not of course to let the general public access to this video, but rather use it as a teaching tool among medical students. Google Glass also allowed surgeons to communicate with their colleagues.

The first to be experimented in June Rafael Grossman, doctor in Maine, United States. Equipped with glasses, he asked a gastric tube endoscopy. Rafael Grossman says on his blog and comments for Forbes . “The procedure was simple and unobtrusive Google Glass was like a second nature” The second attempt took place on June 21 at the clinic Cemtro Madrid. Dr. Pedro GuillĂ©n, bolder, made a cartilage graft on a patient of 49 years. With its Google Glass, the operation was followed by doctors around the world. Even finding the surgeon almost forgot he was wearing that piece of technology on the nose.

Point of View

Finally, the most recent experience was conducted on August 21 by Christopher Kaeding, surgeon Wexner Medical Center at the University of the State of Ohio. It was this time to repair the anterior cruciate ligament outside of a woman 47 years. The performance was broadcast live to a group of students. “I think we had all seen the surgeons in the operating room, taking us from a distance. But here, it really shows you what happens in the operation itself,” says Ryan Blackwell, the one of the students. Indeed, this is a real opportunity to get closer to the action before practicing self. The operation was also followed by a surgical colleague. Glasses designed to capture subjective view, the consultant could actually imagine the block and deliver the best advice.

But beyond these applications, the Google Glass could afford to go much further and access surgery in augmented reality. In fact, they could be used to display the patient’s heart rhythm, his last radio or any other relevant medical information. Even if it is currently operating, the surgeon would have access to all necessary data directly in his field of vision.

Team Medical Center in Ohio found some negatives to this new equipment points. Students sometimes have some difficulty in seeing the actions of the surgeon whose hands found themselves out almost immediately. In addition, the battery would not be large enough to procedures for several hours. “I had an extra battery in my pocket, it would have allowed me to take about two hours,” says Christopher Kaeding ABC News.

In April 2013, the firm IHS analysis predicted that the glasses connected could represent a market of nearly 10 million units by 2016. But subject to relevant and useful applications emerge. So if the movie porn does not convince analysts, these surgeons have shown that Google Glass were not just a gimmick. Saving lives, somewhat, not
