Global sales of “smartphones”, these smart phones that allow access to the Internet, were greater in volume than those of ordinary mobile phones for the first time in the second quarter, exploding 46.5% year on year, according to research firm Gartner released Wednesday. More broadly, they brought the mobile market in the world, which increased by 3.6% over the period to reach 435 million units. Smartphones accounted for 51.8% of sales of mobile devices in the second quarter, with 225 million units. It is sold at the same time as 210 million phones simple, down 21% year on year. The largest increases in sales of “smartphones” have occurred in Asia-Pacific (+ 74.1%), Latin America (+55.7%) and Eastern Europe (+31.6%), the study says. The South Korean manufacturer Samsung Electronics has established its dominance with 107 million devices sold (all categories) in the quarter, or 24.7% of the global market. Of these, 71 million were “smartphones” (31,7%), which confirms its position as world number one, ahead of American Apple, which only holds 14.2% market share against 18.8 % a year earlier. Samsung is also the market leader in simple mobile phones to Nokia, which continues to fall. The former Finnish leader, who later took the turn of smartphones, held only 14% of the world market (all categories) nearly 20% against the previous year. And despite the good reception given to its range of Lumia smartphones equipped with a Microsoft operating system, whose sales jumped 12.7% from April to June For Gupta, Nokia has however “built a range of devices on all price ranges, which should promote Lumia sales in the second half.” Gartner expects 1.82 billion mobile phones will be sold worldwide in 2013.
